The decision to emigrate is not without consequences and must be carefully evaluated. Living and working in a foreign country may be an enriching experience on a social, economic and human level however, numerous difficulties must also be overcome. In order to assure a positive outcome and true integration it is necessary to know, and respect, the laws of the country of destination, in particular those relating to foreign citizens.

In this section the main set of rules that regulates the presence of citizens coming from non EU- nations in Italy will be described, with particular attention on immigration for work related purposes. The subjects dealt with are entrance in state territory, resident permits, expulsion and integration.

The moment of entrance is decisive, it is from the regularity of such that the issuance of the necessary documents to reside on national territory is determined. Furthermore, the motive for which the entrance is authorized determines the type of resident permit issued and, therefore, the possibility to carry out work activities.

The possession of valid documents that authorize the permanent stay in Italy is fundamental, not only to avoid expulsion and the consequential sanctions, but also to assure entitlement to the rights and services that allow a proper integration.
